In my work, I use non-traditional materials, which allow me to explore the intersection between painting & sculpture. Shrinkable plastic enables me to create a visual metaphor for universal human experiences. The material is put through a trying process of intense stress; it contorts, shrinks, melts, folds into itself & only then emerges complete & different. The material literally begins as a thin flat sheet & has the ability to evolve into an object that takes up space when heat is introduced. Using this material has allowed my work to investigate conceptual ideas about time & space, more specifically complex issues of recovery & how time tends to heal, transform & redefine the human spirit.
My process is driven by the curiousity of material possibilites, as well as formal & conceptual concerns. I intentionally use color as an artiface, a device meant to lure the viewer in with sweet candy & cosmetic colors. This color choice acts as a strategy for concealing or hiding a personal narrative. An ongoing theme in my work is the idea of veiling & unveiling, being able to hide or reveal images. This use of veiling images creates a visual metaphor for univeral human tendancies: to hide, to pretend, compartmentalize, or to be transparent. The space & tension inbetween vulnerability & concealment is one that I find loaded with possibilties.
